Aztec or Nahuatl writing is pre-Columbian writing system that combines ideographic writing with Nahuatl specific phonetic logograms and syllabic signs which was used in central Mexico by the Nahua people. Taxes had to be collected, lawsuits between villages or private individuals had all to be recorded, and the merchants kept accounts of their goods and profits.
However, the Aztec language did not have a fully developed system of writing since it lacked alphabets and instead messages were conveyed through pictographs and various drawings. The Aztecs followed a simple writing system. Conversely, many scholars believe the Aztec writing system was invented a mere 200 years before the arrival of the Spanish and continued to be used until about 100 years after the conquest, finally disappearing in the mid-17 th century. Events, such as solar eclipses, floods, droughts, or famines, are painted around the years, often linked to the years by a line or just painted adjacent to them.
City of Cuauhnahuac (now Cuernavaca) The peoples of central Mexico used several different methods to express ideas in writing. It consisted of a cycle of 260 days which were represented by a combination of numbers from 1 to 13 in addition to one of the twenty day signs.
